What is the difference between a natural pregnancy and a surrogate pregnancy?

A surrogate pregnancy follows the same physiological process as a natural pregnancy achieved through IVF. The medical steps and monitoring procedures are consistent with those used in a natural pregnancy, all following well-established medical protocols.

How is embryo transfer performed for a surrogate mother?

Embryo transfer for a surrogate mother is identical to that for any IVF patient. The procedure typically involves the transfer of cryopreserved embryos on the 18th to 21st day of the menstrual cycle. This procedure is carried out in a medical facility by an embryologist and reproductive specialist and usually lasts around 20 minutes. It is completely painless.

Where does the surrogate mother live during the program?

Our Center requires surrogate mothers to reside in Abu Dhabi from the time of embryo transfer until delivery. The accommodations provided are fully furnished with all essentials, such as bedding, household appliances, and wireless internet, to ensure a comfortable living environment.

Can a surrogate mother see her family during pregnancy?

While surrogate mothers can live with one of their children during the pregnancy, we do not allow other family members to stay in the provided accommodations. This is to ensure the comfort and well-being of all surrogates in the program.

Can intended parents request specific conditions for the surrogate mother?

All the responsibilities and requirements for the surrogate mother are outlined in a legally binding agreement, verified by a notary. If the intended parents wish to request additional conditions, these must adhere to legal and ethical standards and will require notarial approval before inclusion in the contract.

Who pays for the surrogate mother’s food and medication?

Our Center provides each surrogate mother with a monthly allowance for enhanced nutrition, and all required medications are purchased and provided by us.

Are sexual relations allowed during a surrogate pregnancy?

Once a surrogate mother has passed all necessary medical tests and has joined the program, sexual activity is strictly prohibited. This measure is in place to prevent the risk of sexually transmitted infections, gynecological complications, and harm to the pregnancy or baby. Sexual activity could also cause uterine contractions, which may lead to miscarriage. The surrogate mother is responsible for adhering to this medical guideline.

Can the intended parents refuse to take the child after birth?

In the UAE, intended (genetic) parents are legally recognized as the child’s parents from the moment of birth. Abandoning the child is illegal and carries serious legal consequences for the parents.
